Implants & Implant Supported Crowns
We offer implant surgeries and implanted supported crowns at North Island Dental.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a tiny, screw-like artificial root (usually made of titanium) that a dentist places into the jawbone to replace the missing root of a tooth. After the implant integrates with the bone, a custom crown is placed so the implant looks much like a natural tooth. Implants can support single crowns, bridges, or a denture.
What are the benefits of a dental implant?
Bone preservation. Because implants replace the tooth root, they stimulate the jawbone and help prevent the bone loss that normally follows a missing tooth.
No damage to adjacent teeth. A conventional bridge requires preparing the neighboring teeth to anchor the bridge. An implant replaces the missing tooth without needing to alter your adjacent natural teeth.
Easier hygiene and comfort. An implant-supported crown is cleaned much like a natural tooth with flossing and brushing. A bridges can sometimes be harder to clean under the replacement tooth, called a Pontic.
What are some alternatives to a dental implant?
Implants require oral surgery, and the timeline is longer than a bridge or denture. Also, not all patients are candidates for an implant. This could be because of insufficient bone or certain medical conditions. Some alternative options include: doing nothing, a traditional bridge, a partial removable denture, or orthodontic treatment.
